National Award-winning singer Sonu Nigam recently stirred a debate by questioning the selection process of the National Awards jury. In a heartfelt statement, Nigam highlighted how several iconic singers, who have left an indelible mark on the Indian music industry, are yet to receive their deserved recognition.
The legendary singer pointed out glaring omissions in the honors list, mentioning names like Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghoshal, and Sunidhi Chauhan. These artists, despite their immense contributions, have not been awarded the National Award for their exceptional talent and impact on music.
Nigam said, "The world has been inspired by two such singers." Mohammed Rafi Sahab, one of them, could only see the Padma Shri. The other, Kishore Kumar Ji, didn’t even receive that. Awards are being given posthumously, but these legends deserved recognition during their lifetimes.”
Sonu Nigam’s concerns didn’t stop at past icons; he also questioned why contemporary artists like Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghoshal, and Sunidhi Chauhan have not been honored. “Alka Yagnik Ji has had such a long and illustrious career, yet she hasn’t been recognized with an award. Shreya Ghoshal, who has consistently proven her artistry, also deserves to be honored. Sunidhi Chauhan, with her unique voice that has inspired a generation, is another name that comes to mind. None of them have received the acknowledgment they deserve,” he added.
The statement has sparked conversations among fans and industry insiders alike. Many agree that these singers have significantly shaped Bollywood music, creating timeless hits and inspiring countless artists worldwide.
